Career Paths

As Berkeley physics students, your skills are sought after by all kinds of employers. Some job titles held by physics students are

  • Research/Lab Assistant
  • High School Science Teacher
  • Technical Consultant
  • Hardware Engineer
  • Software Engineer
  • Data Scientist
  • Financial Analyst

and many more. For example, take a look at the Career Destination Survey responses collected from 2018 physics graduates.

Resources

Physics Career Guide

The Physics Career Guide is a quite comprehensive summary of the types of opportunities as well as the resources available to help pursue them. (Much of the following sections is inspired by this guide!)

The Career Center

The UC Berkeley career center is one of the most valuable resources when looking for jobs and internships. It offers a variety of services such as counseling appointments, resume writing workshops, employer information sessions, and career fairs.

Handshake, LinkedIn, etc.

These are platforms where you can search for job opportunities, showcase your resume to recruiters, and build your professional network. In particular, Handshake is linked to your university account, so your academic information such as year, major, and courses taken is made visible to recruiters. You can also find lots of Career Center resources on Handshake (making appointments, mock interviewing, RSVPing for events and workshops, etc.). When you've updated and polished your profiles on these platforms, don't be surprised when recruiters slide into your DM!
