To kick off the semester, we're having a movie night on Tuesday 1/25, the Major's Lunch on Friday 1/28, and a BBQ on Friday 2/11. Maybe we'll fill more stuff in there so watch your email and the list of events on the right side of the page here.

The fine print: As of yet, I have been unable to locate a copy of Superman (1978). If you have Superman on DVD and would be willing to let us borrow it for a couple of hours - we will be so thankful - please e-mail me. In the event I cannot locate Superman, we will be watching Superman II, since it was found in abundance at movie rental stores around Berkeley. |

Tomorrow, Tuesday May 11, all computers services and refridgerator services will be shut down from approximately 10AM to Noon to replace old electrical sockets. This includes sps.berkeley.edu, the computers in sps, the wireless router in sps, and to prevent any food spoilage during the period without electricity, the refridgerator. There is a good possibility that it will be done before the time they told us.

Sumner Davis' Retirement Party |

Please join us in honoring Professor Sumner Davis on the occasion
of his retirement from teaching. We want to thank him for his 45
years of service on the Berkeley faculty and in particular his
contribution to the Physics 111 course. Since his official retirement
in 1993, Sumner has taught 111 every semester and invested tremendous
energy in improving the course. This party will be an opportunity to
thank Sumner for his service and to wish him well on his move to
Arizona, where he will begin a research collaboration at Kitt Peak
National Observatory and pursue other interests.

Its that time again for another career seminar. Our Speaker this week is Charles Haynor who received his bachelors in physics in 1990, and then went on to get his MBA from Haas in 1997. So come by this Weds at Noon in the Reading Room and hear him speak!
Charles Haynor is President and COO of Rayner Associates, Inc., an investment advisory firm with over $275 million under management and based in Marin County. His clients range from large institutions, to families with tens of millions of dollars and a number of complicated trusts, to individuals building their IRA for retirement. In addition, he finds that the strong quantitative skills that he developed studying physics at Cal are particularly important in the investment industry and for running a business.

Scott is Pres & CEO of a Santa Cruz winery. Skip is an Engineer for Coherent, Inc. They have stayed in touch since graduating, but their physics degrees have taken them in very different directions. |

We're starting up a new game of 'Assassins' for the next few weeks. In case you don't know how it's played, here's the basic rundown:
Everyone who signs up gets a target that they have to "kill" in some fashion (usually via water pistol or Nerf gun, but a ninja would also do nicely). Once you kill your target, you take theirs and continue upon your path of carnage.
This year, we're going to do a double-elimination game, so you still have a chance of winning if you're killed (and a chance to get back at your own assassin!).
The last man standing wins. No prizes...just gloating rights.
We're aiming to start sometime early next week. Sign up now in the Reading Room (251 LeConte) or on the SPS office door (275 LC) so we can start the fun!!

There will also be an SPS barbecue at the usual place and usual time (11:30a-1p) on Wednesday March 31st. There will be a movie night next Wednesday, March 17th, in 375 LeConte.
